Classroom Ideas 

London: City of Pomp and Majesty

Webquest

Write a webquest on London’s four Unesco World Heritage sites. Give students time to complete the webquest (either individually or in partners or groups).

 

History of London Storybook

Have students create a short storybook on the history of London. They can focus on one specific period or landmark. Ask them to include pictures. Younger children will enjoy drawing the pictures, while older ones might prefer to find photographs and illustrations to include.

 

Landmark Tour Guide

Ask students to write a tour guide to an important London landmark.

 

Landmark Geometry

Identify geometric shapes found in the famous structures such as the Tower of Westminster in London. Create structures using various geometric shapes (toothpick tower, etc.)

 

Transportation around the World

Compare/contrast various modes of transportation in different countries (the Tube in London vs. classic cars in Cuba).

 

Country Report

Have students write a report about London including: landmarks, population, history (how it came to be), type of government, economy, famous sites, architecture, interesting facts, food, etc.

 

Tower of London

Create a worksheet about the history and timeline of the Tower of London.

 

Character Profiles

Ask students to write a detailed character profile of an important London historical figure. Require them to include a drawing or picture they have found of the person.

 

Mapping

Have students print out a map of London and identify where the sites in the video are located. 

Place of Honour

Pick one of the many people buried in Westminster Abbey.  Each student chooses a different person. Have students research their life and determine why they were given the honor of being buried there.

Explore signature foods from England such as tea and scones.

Art History

Recreate famous pieces of art that are found in London, e.g. Vincent Van Gogh’s “Sunflowers”.

Local Festivals

Have students research British festivals at the local, state, and national levels. 

Creative Writing

Write a story with London as the setting. The main character could be from another country (compare and contrast characters).
